Prevention of HIV Infection in Roma Communities Through Field-Work

Basic factors putting Roma in high risk of HIV infection or transfer are poverty, illiteracy and marginalized position in the society. Roma are, in most cases, left out of educational and other activities regarding HIV prevention, and the prevention activities are, at most times, unadjusted to their specific needs. Since 2004 NSHC, has been conducting projects on HIV/AIDS prevention among marginalized groups throughout Vojvodina. NSHC holds a rich experience in field-work with Roma, in education of educators and peer educators of Roma population, organization and conduct of workshops, focus groups and educational meetings in Roma communities.

With support from the Serbian Ministry of Health, within the Global Fund funded project ''Improving National Response to HIV/AIDS through Decentralization of Key Health Services'', NSHC has started implementation of a nine-month project ''Prevention of HIV Infection in Roma Communities Through Field-Work'' in Novi Sad and Subotica.

With the aim of lowering the risk of HIV infection among Roma population in target communities, and forming the grounds for long-term preventional work, NSHC has formed a team of 10 field workers and 10 Roma peer educators. After the training, they are going to organize 160 workshops and educational meetings with 1.920 members of Roma population, using the participatory work method. Local communities are going to be informed about the programme and invited to take an active part in future preventional events. During the project, 2.000 informative pamphlets and 5.000 free condoms are going to be distributed to the members of target groups. NSHC sucessfully cooperates with Roma associations and representatives of local communities in implementation of this project.
